Background of the Study
Religious education is a critical factor in promoting personal accountability among students, fostering a sense of responsibility and ethical behavior. In Maiduguri LGA, Borno State, secondary school students are exposed to religious teachings that emphasize accountability, self-discipline, and moral conduct. These teachings provide a foundation for personal development, guiding students in making responsible choices both within and outside the academic setting (Abdul, 2023). The curriculum integrates religious values that highlight the importance of individual accountability and the consequences of unethical behavior. As students engage with religious texts and participate in related activities, they develop a heightened sense of personal responsibility (Sule, 2024). This educational approach not only supports academic success but also encourages students to take ownership of their actions in various aspects of life. The influence of religious education on personal accountability is particularly significant in environments where social and economic challenges may undermine ethical behavior. In Maiduguri LGA, where students often face diverse pressures, religious instruction serves as a stabilizing force that promotes self-regulation and moral clarity. The background study examines the role of religious education in cultivating personal accountability among secondary school students, exploring how it contributes to the development of self-discipline, honesty, and a strong work ethic. It also investigates the mechanisms through which religious teachings are internalized and reflected in students' daily lives. Despite the potential benefits, there is a lack of comprehensive research specifically addressing the impact of religious education on personal accountability in this region. This study aims to fill that gap by providing empirical evidence on the relationship between religious instruction and accountable behavior among secondary school students. Ultimately, the research will offer insights into how religious education can be leveraged to enhance personal accountability, thereby contributing to improved academic performance and social behavior. These findings will be instrumental in guiding future educational strategies for progress.
Statement of the Problem
Although religious education is intended to instill values of accountability and ethical behavior, secondary school students in Maiduguri LGA, Borno State, continue to exhibit varying levels of personal accountability. Despite regular exposure to religious teachings that emphasize responsibility and self-discipline, many students struggle to consistently apply these principles in their daily lives (Usman, 2023). The discrepancy between the moral ideals promoted through religious education and the actual behaviors observed in school settings has raised concerns among educators and community leaders. Factors such as peer influence, economic challenges, and social instability may contribute to this gap (Ibrahim, 2024). Moreover, the current educational framework may not sufficiently address the practical application of accountability principles, leaving students without clear guidelines on how to translate religious teachings into responsible actions. The absence of targeted interventions to reinforce personal accountability exacerbates the problem, resulting in inconsistent behavioral outcomes. This study seeks to examine the extent to which religious education influences personal accountability among secondary school students in Maiduguri LGA. By identifying the factors that hinder the effective internalization of accountability principles, the research aims to provide evidence-based recommendations for curriculum improvement and teacher training. Ultimately, the goal is to bridge the gap between religious instruction and accountable behavior, ensuring that students are better equipped to meet the ethical challenges of contemporary society (Kadiri, 2025).
